Possible spoilers ahead. Although if you haven’t seen some of these movies by now, what are you waiting for?!?
Jim Carrey is one of the greatest comedic actors of all time and one of my all-time personal favorites. It was difficult to choose just one show or movie to highlight as the best as well as choose just one lesser-known one. In deciding, I went with ones I’ve seen countless times and have no problem repeatedly watching just because they’re that good. With that said, here is what I came up with.
My favorite Movie/TV Show he has been in:
The Truman Show and Dumb and Dumber. I just couldn’t bring myself only to choose one of these. They are both equally great in my opinion.
The Truman Show (1998)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 95%
IMDB rating: 8.2/10
Where to watch: Amazon Prime Video, AMC+, Paramount+
“The Truman Show” stands out as a masterpiece in his filmography. This satirical drama showcases Carrey’s incredible range as an actor, as he brings both comedic charm and poignant vulnerability to the character of Truman Burbank. The film explores the theme of reality versus illusion, as Truman slowly begins to question the nature of his seemingly perfect life, which is actually a meticulously crafted television show. Carrey’s ability to seamlessly transition from humor to deep emotional moments is truly remarkable.
It is a thought-provoking film that challenges our perceptions of reality and the power of media and technology. Carrey’s performance is captivating, drawing us into Truman’s journey of self-discovery and making us empathize with his desire to break free from the artificial world that has defined his existence. The movie is beautifully crafted, with a compelling story, a strong supporting cast, and brilliant direction by Peter Weir.
My rating:
I give “The Truman Show” a 9.7/10. It’s a must-watch for any Jim Carrey fan or anyone who appreciates thought-provoking cinema. Carrey’s performance is outstanding, and the film’s themes and execution make it a timeless classic.
Dumb and Dumber (1994)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 68%
IMDB rating: 7.3 and/10
Where to watch: Max, Amazon Prime Video
When it comes to comedic brilliance and unadulterated laughter, few films can match the timeless charm and sheer hilarity of “Dumb and Dumber.” Released in 1994, this iconic comedy masterpiece directed by the Farrelly brothers introduced the world to the uproarious talents of Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels. Their impeccable chemistry, impeccable timing, and masterful performances catapulted the film into a league of its own, ensuring its place as a true classic in the annals of comedy cinema.
Jim Carrey delivers an absolute tour de force performance as Lloyd Christmas. Carrey’s ability to seamlessly transition from one hilarious scenario to another is a testament to his comedic prowess. His boundless energy and impeccable comedic timing bring Lloyd’s dim-witted, yet lovable character to life in a way that only Carrey can. From the iconic “Most Annoying Sound in the World” scene to the unforgettable toilet humor, Carrey’s uninhibited comedic genius is displayed throughout the film. “Dumb and Dumber” has withstood the test of time, remaining a beloved comedy classic for nearly three decades. Carrey’s performance in this film is a testament to his status as a comedic legend, capable of turning any scene into a riotous masterpiece. Jeff Daniels also brings an energy to the character of Harry Dunne that I’m not sure could be matched by anyone else playing that character. However, we’ll save a review of Daniels for another time.
If you’re looking for a film that will leave you doubled over with laughter, “Dumb and Dumber” is an absolute must-watch.
My Rating:
I’m giving Dumb and Dumber a 9.5/10. I know it’s humor that some people won’t understand and may find stupid, but at the end of the day, this is Jim Carrey at his best, which can only be matched by a handful of comedians.
My favorite Movie/TV Show he has been in that you may not have seen:
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 92%
IMDB rating: 8.3/10
Where to watch: Starz, Amazon Prime Video
While “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” may have gained a significant following over the years, it remains a hidden gem for some. Carrey’s role as Joel Barish in this mind-bending romantic drama showcases his versatility as an actor. Directed by Michel Gondry and written by Charlie Kaufman, the film explores the intricacies of memory, love, and the human experience.
Carrey delivers a deeply nuanced performance, capturing the essence of Joel’s pain, confusion, and ultimately, his acceptance. The movie’s nonlinear narrative and surreal visual style add layers of complexity to the story, creating a mesmerizing viewing experience. Carrey shares remarkable chemistry with Kate Winslet, who plays his love interest, and their on-screen dynamic is both heartwarming and heartbreaking.
“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” is a beautifully crafted film that dives into the depths of human emotions and the complexities of relationships. Carrey’s portrayal of Joel is a testament to his dramatic prowess and ability to fully immerse himself in a character.
My rating:
I give “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” a solid 8.9/10. It’s a captivating and thought-provoking film that showcases Carrey’s versatility as an actor. If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend giving it a watch.
Don’t waste your time with this Movie/TV Show:
Dumb and Dumber To (2014)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 28%
IMDB rating: 5.6/10
Where to watch: Max, Amazon Prime Video
While Jim Carrey has had his fair share of successful comedic roles, “Dumb and Dumber To” falls flat compared to its predecessor. This belated sequel to the original “Dumb and Dumber” lacks the charm and clever humor that made the first film a cult classic. Carrey reprises his role as Lloyd Christmas, and while his physical comedy skills are still present, the overall execution of the movie falls short.
The humor feels forced, and the storyline fails to recapture the magic of the original. Carrey and his co-star Jeff Daniels give it their all, but the weak script and lackluster jokes make it a forgettable experience. It’s disappointing to see Carrey’s comedic talents wasted in a film that fails to live up to its predecessor’s comedic genius.
My rating:
I give “Dumb and Dumber To” a disappointing 4/10. It lacks the wit and charm of the original and fails to deliver on the comedic front. If you’re a fan of the first film, it’s best to avoid this sequel.
